The other team tennis.

World Team Tennis relaunches on 1 December with Pegula, Fritz and Tiafoe, all six matches on CNBC in primetime, and the endorsement of the USTA’s chairman. It is also six nights of exhibition tennis in a window we deliberately do not play. Both of those things are true, and the second one is the one people will get wrong.

Say this: “the USTA’s chairman endorsed it in WTT’s own press release.”

Never say or imply this: that the USTA sanctions, funds or partners with World Team Tennis. On the public record it does none of those things — and the USTA has renamed its own grassroots co-ed league off the WTT brand.

What it actually is.

Six matches. Six nights. Fifteen days. Three clubs, fourteen players. No playoff and no championship match has been announced. WTT calls it its 47th season; functionally it is a three-week exhibition series with a league wrapper.

A third of the inventory is Canadian, and Tennis Canada is publicly supporting it — which is a real federation relationship, unlike the USTA one.

The format, against ours.

Four singles sets in fixed order — men’s No. 1, women’s No. 1, men’s No. 2, women’s No. 2 — then a mixed-doubles ten-point tiebreak, played every match regardless of the score. It is a singles showcase with a doubles garnish.

Why it is not a competitive threat this year.

They vacated our window on purpose. Historic WTT played July and August, head-on with us. This is December — “intentionally moved outside of the traditional tennis calendar.” There is no announced intent to return.
No talent overlap. They are signing top-150 players for a two-night appearance. We pay $40,000 for an eight-week season. We are not bidding against each other.
No club market. Single entity, league-owned clubs, no franchise sold and no expansion-fee model announced. There is nothing for a local owner to buy.
No sponsor announced at all as of three months out, despite retaining an agency in July.
The media deal reads as launch fill, not validation. Fandango’s ad-supported streaming service launched on 15 July, seven weeks before the deal, and needs live sport to launch against. WTT sits in the same tier as League One Volleyball and the Pro Padel League. Versant turns over $1.64bn a quarter.

The two things that are real.

Narrative crowding. They own the two assets we would have to manufacture: the 1974 Billie Jean King origin story, and names a general sports desk already knows. They are claiming “the first-ever professional mixed-gender team league in sports,” and on provenance they are right by fifty-two years. Every gender-equity team-tennis story written in America over the next eighteen months will lead with them. We do not win that by arguing; we win it by being the one with a season, a table and a champion.

Player equity. This is the one thing we structurally cannot match with a base wage and drafted rosters, and it is the line every player and agent repeats. Jessica Pegula said it unprompted — and she also chairs the WTA’s Tour Architecture Council.

The honest counter is not to dispute it. It is that their equity structure is entirely undisclosed — no percentage, no vesting, no qualifying threshold, and no dollar figure for any component of what a player is paid. Ours is cash, contracted, and known. Watch for the moment a WTT player says a number out loud.

How to talk about it.

Let the structural facts carry it: an open draft against invited allocation; a forty-three-Arc season against six nights; a contracted base wage against an undisclosed appearance fee. State them flatly and let the listener draw the conclusion.

Don’t

Call it an exhibition in writing. WTT ran with standings from 1974, the USTA’s chairman endorsed the relaunch four months ago, and a dismissive line in a document that reaches that orbit costs more than it wins.

Say “we play in the summer, they play in December” when the overlap question comes up. It is true, it is their own stated design, and it ends the question.

Don’t

Claim any “first” in mixed-gender team tennis. They have 1974. What we hold is the first open mixed-gender professional draft — any player could enter rather than being allocated from an invited tier.

Why it failed before — and these are our failure modes too.

Star availability was always the binding constraint. The 1974–78 league worked because stars would skip majors for it. Once tour prize money and ranking points outgrew appearance fees, the talent thinned.
Franchise economics never worked — twenty years of clubs folding and relocating. Owning every club at league level removes that failure mode, and removes the revenue line with it.
Summer was a squeeze, not a gap. They played July and August against everything else in American sport. That is the window we now occupy, and it is the reason to keep proving it works.
Undercapitalised and serially rescued — three ownership groups in nine years.
The pause became the ending. Last match played November 2021 at Indian Wells. The 2022 season was cancelled, a 2023 return was promised, and the league went dark. There was no balance sheet to wait it out.

What to watch.

Whether a 2027 plan appears. In May the CEO could not say how many events or teams they intend to run. Four months on, he still has not.
Whether they move back to summer. December only holds while it suits the players. If the window produces no ratings and no sponsor, the pressure runs toward July.
The first disclosed compensation number. It reframes the equity conversation in whichever direction it points.
Whether the USTA relationship ever becomes more than one quote.
